PHILADELPHIA, Pa – Philadelphia Lone Star Football Club is thrilled to announce today that the club will join the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) as an expansion side for the 2019 season after launching its first women’s team this year, “Philadelphia Lone Star FC Women.”
Philadelphia Lone Star is one of the top professional amateur soccer clubs in Pennsylvania, and like the Men’s team, the Women’s team will provide elite local female college and high school athletes the opportunity to compete in a very competitive league during the Summer to prepare them for their respective Fall seasons.
Paul A. Konneh III, the club’s president and executive director since 2011, is very excited about the women’s team competing in the WPSL.
“Our board is very delighted that the WPSL approved our application to begin our inaugural season in 2019,” Konneh said. “In our 17-year history, this will be our first women’s team. We know it will be a challenge to play in a very competitive league like the WPSL in our first season, but we will make every effort to ensure that our new women’s team be successful like all Philadelphia Lone Star FC sides.”
The WPSL is in its 22nd season and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with more than 100 clubs from coast-to-coast. WPSL rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep student-athletes. Many of the United States’ most accomplished women’s players have played in the WPSL, including household names such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.
Meanwhile, the club recently announced that Charlie Flowe will be the women’s team coach for its inaugural season in the WPSL. Flowe has coached soccer in Philadelphia since 2002 and was the play-by-play voice for Sky Blue FC in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Philadelphia Lone Star FC Women will hold tryouts on Sunday, Dec. 23 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Suburban Sports Training Center in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania and interested players can register HERE.
The club will play its home matches at the South Philadelphia Athletic Super Site on Bigler St., which is less than a 10-minute walk from the nearest SEPTA Broad Street Line rapid transit station. It will have three immediate rivals in the Greater Philadelphia area with Penn Fusion SA (West Chester), Torch FC (Perkasie) and Philly Fever (Oakford).
